CBD oil may help with some symptoms of seizures and epilepsy, although most people prefer to use the isolated CBD compound as a treatment. Taking CBD together with other medications that have similar side effects may increase the risk of unwanted symptoms or toxicity. The Epilepsy Foundation notes that, although there is some evidence to suggest that CBD may help control seizures, scientists have been striving to expand this research due to the strict government regulations surrounding cannabis. One reason for this may be that commercial CBD products had higher levels of THC, which can trigger seizures.
Taking CBD with stimulants (such as Adderall) may cause a decrease in appetite, while taking it with the diabetes medication metformin or certain medications for heartburn (such as Prilosec) may increase the risk of diarrhea. The Farm Bill removes federal restrictions on CBD and legalizes the cultivation, manufacture and sale of these products in the United States. The high rate of EA in the concomitant use of CBD and CLB for extended periods of time may not be safe. In addition, all the molecular targets used by CBD to exert its antiepileptic action are not yet known.
Research has found evidence that CBD may enhance the effect of the drug clobazam (Onfi), which is often used to treat epilepsy. CBD oral solution (Epidiolex) was administered in addition to other anti-epileptic treatments to 26 patients (1 to 17 years old). Although the administration of CBD has caused high rates of EA, CBD appears to be effective in treating patients with Down syndrome. The results of this study showed that CBD can be considered safe and tolerable even at high concentrations.
Therefore, CLB causes an increase in serum levels of the CBD metabolite (7-OH-CBD) and, conversely, CBD causes an increase in the CLB metabolite (n-CLB). In this retrospective study, the objective is to define the efficacy of CBD alone or in association with CLB in 209 children (≤ 19 years) with epilepsy. The mechanism by which CBD interacts with other DEAs is not yet fully understood, since many of the metabolic pathways involved in this interaction are still unknown. The oral CBD solution used for treatment, with prior approval from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, was prepared at the University of Mississippi and subsequently received FDA approval for compassionate use.
